Causes Of Stress And Anxiety
Stress and anxiety are a normal part of daily life and are not all bad. Stress is basically anything that is unexpected or out of the normal daily activity that pushes us out of our comfort zone to make a decision or take action on something new, difficult or unpleasant.
Stress is unavoidable in anyone’s life and attempting to avoid it altogether can compound problems. In fact, some of the most serious health and mental problems are a direct result of people taking drugs and alcohol in order to escape or avoid facing life’s unexpected or difficult challenges, only to compound the problems. Even if we were in a completely controlled environment in which all of our needs were taken care of, we would still encounter stress when limits to our growth were encountered. Without complete freedom to grow, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually, we begin to die as soon as personal growth stops. This process alone can cause stress.
Some specific causes of stress we all experience and cannot avoid dealing with without increasing anxiety include:
Education challenges;
Conflicts in relationships;
loss of loved ones through death or divorce;
Illness or injury;
chemical or nutritional imbalance (poor diet or abuse)
changes at work (management, rules, responsibilities, etc);
loss of employment;
physical changes (weight gain, aging, etc.);
Child rearing challenges;
Natural disaster, damage or loss of home;
Personal responsibilities to others;
car accident or breakdown;
fear of unknown, etc;
A certain level of stress is good and necessary for our personal growth and development. It helps to motivate encourage us to be creative and find solutions to our life’s problems. Anxiety is just the emotional byproduct of stress. The level of anxiety is determined by how we deal with the stress in our life, as well as the number of difficult challenges we face at a given time.
Many drugs, both medicinal and recreational and can cause anxiety due to the effect on brain chemistry or withdrawal from the drug. Such drugs include:
* Antidepressants
* ADHD medications
* Alcohol
* Amphetamines
* Caffeine
* Cocaine
* Cold remedies
* Decongestants
* Diet pills
* Nicotine
* Thyroid medications
* Many other pharmaceuticals
The problem of to much anxiety doesn’t lie in the difficult challenges or stress we experience. It is mostly a result of how we choose to deal with those challenges. Or what is worse, to not face and deal with them at all.
In order to be best prepared to face and deal with our daily stress and anxiety, is to be mentally sharp and able to focus on a solution and carry out the necessary actions to solve the problem and move on.
There are several things required to always be prepared to conquer any problem you face. One of the most important things you can do which will limit the amount of anxiety you will ever face, is to eat a healthy, balanced diet and not overeat. Not only will you avoid many difficult and stressful health problems, it will also help keep a balanced brain chemistry, so you can think quickly, creatively and intuitively, to solve any problem you face.
Another obvious way to avoid unnecessary anxiety is, avoid recreational drugs, tobacco and alcohol, to maintain the proper brain chemistry and not turn off parts of your brain that are necessary for creativity and intuition. Drugs and alcohol can literally put parts of your brain to sleep almost permanently, severing neural pathways that allow different parts of your brain to communicate with each other. One very important thing that many people overlook that can cause stress and anxiety in itself is getting the proper amount of rest and sleep. In order for us to function properly, we need to experience a certain amount of many brainwave functions, for us to have a healthy mind, brain and body. These brainwave functions are our sleep to waking focus cycles. It requires us to spend some time each day within each of the four states for us to function at an optimal level. These brainwave states also play a major role in our brain chemistry and moods.
If we starve ourselves from mental focus or mental relaxation, or dream state or very deep sleep, we will suffer from excess anxiety, depression, fatigue or many worse symptoms if we are deprived for long periods of time. Relaxation is just as vital to our health as exercise.
