Meditation is not confined any specific religion or faith, although it plays a role in all of them. Focused prayer is a form of meditation. Meditation relates to certain laws of nature in which focused thought and intent, through firm belief and the power of the human mind, and or a higher power or mind produce predictable results.

One popular purpose of meditation is to get to know one’s self and discover or improve our abilities through intense and repeated inward focus and to exercise those abilities through mental practice. These mentally practiced exercises can relate to anything from physical or sporting events to intelectual or memory related activities such as card games, chess or practicing a speech. There is no question that this type of meditation is beneficial in improving ones abilities in these areas.

Meditation is also commonly used for personal development to recognize and eliminate fears or phobias and to change or eliminate bad habits.

Besides eliminating anxiety and stress, meditation can also be used for medical purposes to treat or eliminate pain or to promote healing. It can also be used to treat mental or emotional problems as well. Because of it’s proven effectiveness, even the American Cancer Society lists meditation as a recommended complementary therapy with other cancer treatments on their websites while at the same time warning against trying any other type of alternative treatment(see /self-healing ).
